UK Ambassador Alison Thorpe presents credentials in Burundi
The British Ambassador to Burundi, Alison Thorpe, presented her diplomatic credentials today 1st August 2025 in Gitega, marking the beginning of her tenure as the United Kingdom’s official representative to the beautiful nation of Burundi.  

Thorpe, who also serves as the British High Commissioner to Rwanda, assumes her new role with a focus on strengthening bilateral relations and promoting regional stability. 

Alison Thorpe brings a wealth of experience to the post, having served in various senior roles within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Her previous assignments include head of Africa Strategy and Network Unit, Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes, and Deputy Head of Mission in Sweden and Skopje.  

Her diplomatic career spans nearly three decades, with a strong emphasis on African affairs, trade, and security. 

In her upcoming role, His Majesty’s Ambassador Thorpe is expected to prioritise cooperation in areas such as governance, economic development, and climate resilience.  

Her Excellency Alison Thorpe said: 

“It is an honour to represent the United Kingdom in Burundi, a country of rich culture and resilient spirit. I’m excited to build lasting friendships and work with Burundians to support a future of shared prosperity and peace.” 

Her appointment underscores the UK’s continued engagement in the Great Lakes region and its support for peace and prosperity across Africa.
